May Issue Web Site Designed By: Paul R. Wonning April Meeting Report New Contributors People who have donated items to BAHS Editor’s Note: I usually write a history of some sort related to Batesville or the surrounding area for this newsletter. Due to time limitations, I did not write one this time. I am looking for material for the next newsletter. If you have a story relating to Batesville or the surrounding area’s history, or just an interesting anecdote about how your family came to this area, email me at prwondo@yahoo.com. I am particularly interested in stories about local family’s origins and how they came to Batesville. I would like this to be a regular feature called "Origins". This story would also be a featured addition to the web site’s archive. |
2008 Newsletter - Batesville Area Historical SocietyBusy Year for BAHS The first quarter of the year has seen a lot of exciting developments for the Batesville Area Historical Society. A successful membership luncheon in January resulted in some much needed new members. A Board of Directors has been developed to aid BAHS in growth, acquisition of a museum and to become more active in the community. President Jean Struewing has begun work on a picture history book to be published by Arcadia Publishing which will be an aid in fundraising for our various projects. ![]() Have Fun With Our Little Puzzle Board of Directors Perhaps the most significant development for the long term health of BAHS has been the establishment of a Board of Directors. The Board will establish the criteria and guidelines for the organization and give direction to the officers in their day to day running of the organization. The Board was formally organized at a meeting on April 11, 2008 presided over by John Dickey, chairman of the Board. Applications of the board members were accepted, after which Mr. Dickey led a discussion of the organizations bylaws and the Articles of Incorporation. In addition some basic financial guidelines were adopted and initial committee assignments completed. The members of the Board of Directors of BAHS are: Class I Directors: (Serving 1 Year Terms) Jean Struewing - President, 1Year Tim Dietz - Board Member, 1 Year Don Karbowski - Vice President, 1Year Class II Directors: (Serving 2 Year Terms) Dan Harmeyer - Board Member John Dickey - Board Member Paul Wonning - Secretary Class III Directors: (Serving 3 Year Terms) Juanita "Dee Dee - Kaiser Margie Wilhelm - Treasurer BAHS Committees Executive Committee John Dickey, Chair Jean Struewing Paul Wonning Joan Karbowski Finance Committee Dan Harmeyer, Chair Margie Wilhelm Tim Dietz Marketing and Membership Don Karbowski, Chair Juanita "Dee Dee" Kaiser Since the drive, there has been discussion to try to do two membership drives per year at different locations to drive the membership to our goal of 300 - 500. We encourage all our members to invite someone you know to join our growing organization. There are many exciting things on the horizon for BAHS. The acquisition of a building to use as a museum and headquarters has been one of the most discussed topics during Board and general meetings so far this year. Four different properties have been examined so far. These are the "Buck Building", on Sycamore Street, near downtown Batesville, the old National Bank Building, on the corner of Main and Boehringer, the Flannery house on Walnut Street and the Canfield House on Mulberry Street. Each of these sites has its advantages and disadvantages. The old National Bank building has been removed from the list, as the owner is not interested in selling. The other buildings are still under consideration. From a financial standpoint, the membership has decided that BAHS is not fiscally ready to acquire a building, as there are not adequate resources in the building fund to purchase the building, and income is not at this time adequate to maintain one if purchased. The "Buck Building" has the potential to generate sufficient income to provide maintenance funds if monies were adequate to purchase it outright. The Canfield House would provide enormous opportunities for fundraising events on the grounds surrounding it. The general consensus among the membership right now is to continue to develop the building fund until enough funds are available to purchase a building, and establish a cash reserve to help sustain the operation of the building until the organization’s income rises. President Jean Struewing gave a slide presentation at the Farm City Banquet at the St. Louis Gym in November. Norris and JoAnn Krall of Versailles, Indiana are compiling a book which will be entitled "Ripley County's Greatest". The volume will contain information about World War II veterans and their photographs. Forms to fill in information about the veteran are available from Mr. and Mrs. Krall and also from Jean Struewing - 934-2608. A "photo book" featuring Batesville’s historical sites and its people will be authored by Jean Struewing and published by Arcadia Publishing. Jean described that there is no cost to publish the book and that she has targeted to have the book available by Christmas 2008. There was a robust discussion and several suggestions were made from the membership about the cover of the book, how many copies were needed to print, pre-selling advertisements in the local newspaper and on the net, as well as questions about the price of the book and revenue it will create for the BAHS. Jean informed the membership that the BAHS will address each issue and provide a full report to the membership. It was also agreed that interested BAHS members would submit their favorite Batesville historical picture(s) at the May 20th membership meeting to be considered and nominated as the "book cover". BAHS is trying to assemble a complete email contact list of the membership to facilitate communication among the membership. You may email your email address to President Jean Struewing at jhstruewing@nalu.net. Top Of Page |
