Meeting Report
January 17, 2006
The January meeting of the Batesville Area Historical Society was brought to order at the Batesville Memorial Public Library by President Jean Struewing at 7:00 pm. Discussion at the meeting involved the museum, the Garden Tour and the well in the Farmers Feed building in Batesville. It is thought that this might be the original Teunis Amack well. There is concern that the well will not be protected when the building is torn down.

The meeting was preceded by a presentation by Denise Britch about a historic building in town being converted into a bed and breakfast. The Hillenbrand House at 509 North Walnut Street will become the Stone Bridge Bed and Breakfast, opening sometime in the spring. The B&B will have five luxury rooms, each with a fireplace and bath. The rooms will all have names reflecting the history of the home. The rooms are: the Rosemont Room, Hillcrest Terrace, Hillenbrand Suite, Garden Spa Suite, and the Rooftop Retreat. The Garden Spa Suite overlooks the garden and the Rooftop Retreat will be the only room on the second level. The owners, John and Kathy Schuerman are trying to get the history of the home documented to make it a part of the guest experience. The home was built around 1911 and had a mushroom cellar where the owners grew their own mushrooms.

Meeting Report
February 21, 2006
The February meeting of the Batesville Area Historical Society was held at the Batesville Memorial Public Library. Topics discussed included the possible location of the original Teunis Amack well and its protection until it is authenticated.

The new bed a breakfast inn, Stone Bridge Bed and Breakfast reported that a vault has been located which has the original architechtural plans for both the Romweber house and Hillenbrand house. As the building is converted over to a bed and breakfast all the woodwork and other features are being saved and put into storage in case at some future point someone wants to restore the structure to its original state. They have started taking reservations. BAHS has requested and will receive a tour when the facility is finished.

The meeting was followed by a presentation by the Reverand Dave Smith of St. Marks Lutheran Church. His presentation included an excellent video about the history of St. Marks Church which was made for their 90th anniversary in 1987.

The church was organized in 1897. The first services were held at the old town hall on January 31, 1897 by the Reverend Lederer. Thereafter, until the new church was built services were held in the Town Hall.

The cornerstone of the church was laid on August 15, 1897. The church was completed by March 20, 1898 and dedicated on that day with six ministers officiating. The cost of the building was seven thousand dollars and it had a seating capacity of 700 people.

The church has grown over the years and now boasts a membership of 231 parishioners.
