April, 2005
The Batesville Area Historical Society held its monthly meeting on April
19, 2005 at the Batesville Memorial Public Library. The many topics of
discussion included the launching of a new web site in the near future and
the possible location of Teunis Amacks well, the original well from which
the town had its origins. The well will be investigated further by members
to ascertain its authenticity.
Museum hours will be changed to be shown by appointment only. It will
be opened during special events downtown additionally.
The city is planning on installing two "Welcome To Batesville Signs" at
the exit ramps of the interstate. BAHS has donated $500.00 towards this
project.
The meeting was followed by a talk by Tom Fritch, a member of the United
States Navy. Tom was stationed in Iraq from February 2004 until September
2004. He spoke of his experiences as a member of a supply unit there.
He passed around photographs, service coins and patches. His presentation
was followed by a question and answer period as BAHS members quizzed him
on his experiences. The Batesville Area Historical Society would like to
thank Mr. Fritch for his service to his country and his time to relate his
experiences to our group.
BAHS would like to thank the numerous gifts bestowed upon us by area
residents. Our newsletter will contain a list of benefactors and their
gifts.

May, 2005
The May meeting of the Area Historical Society was held at the Batesville
Memorial Public Library on May 17, 2005.
The most recent project completed by the Historical Society is the thirty
two foot by eight foot mural mounted on the side of the museum on
Boehringer Street. This beautiful artwork was completed by students of the
Batesville High School Art department under the direction of artist
Rebecca Davies.
The mural was mounted by BAHS members under the direction of Joe Greiwe on
May 11, 2005. A dedication was held for the public on May 13, 2005. The
mural is a very nice addition to the community and much credit for this
monument to our town’s history.
Regular hours will again be held for the museum to be open. These hours
will be the 1st and 3rd weekend of every month, 9:00 AM to Noon Saturday,
Noon to 3:00 PM on Sunday. Appointments may be made for the museum to be
opened for groups and special showings.
June, 2005
The June meeting of the Batesville Area Historical Society was held at the
Batesville Memorial Public Library at 7:00 PM on June 17.
The museum will be open on July 9, 2005 for the Raspberry Fest. The many
exhibits in the museum would make an interesting visit for visitors to the
festivities.
Our web site is well under construction and should be done by August.
It will boast many features including histories of Batesville and the
surrounding communities, a photo archive and museum news.
The next meeting will be August 16, 2005 at the Batesville mayor’s office.
Photos of previous city councils have been found and have been remounted and
framed and will be on display for us to peruse after the meeting.
The meeting was followed by a presentation by Reid Meyer, USMC, on his
experiences in Iraq and Kuwait. His talk was followed by a question and
answer session. We would like to commend Sergeant Meyer for his service to
our country and to all the servicemen and women serving our nation in this
endeavor. And the time he took to enlighten us with his experiences was very
much appreciated.

The Batesville Area Historical Society held its August meeting at the
Mayor’s office in the Memorial building on August 16, 2005. The members took
time to admire the newly refurbished photos of Batesville’s previous mayors
and councils. The photos encompass city officials from the beginning of town
government to the present day, with only a few missing photos.
The new web site is now operational and is expected to be a community
resource for the history of the town. Sections include histories, a photo

museum. The address is www.batesvilleareahistoricalsociety.org.

October Meeting Report
The October meeting of the Batesville Area Historical Society was called to
order on Tuesday, October 18, 2005 at 7:00 PM at the Batesville Memorial
Library.
Copies of the photos of the city officials on display at the mayors office
were made by Dave Engleking and framed by Rich Fowler. They will be on
display periodically at the museum.
BAHS received the Volunteer Organization of the Year award from Rural
Alliance for the Arts. Margie Wilhelm, Rosalie Geis, and Jean Streuwing
accepted the award at their August meeting. We would like to thank the RAA
for their recognition.
Fourteen members of BAHS participated in this WRBI Reality Day this year.
The Reality Day is a day long program held at Jac-Cen-Del school. Eighth
Grade students participate in a "reality check" as they learn lessons in
real life situations. They are given "jobs" in which they draw a "paycheck".
From this they must pay taxes, buy groceries, rent apartments, raise
"children", and other day to day expenses. If their money runs out, they
must take another "job" to make ends meet. This program exhibits real life
lessons to the students from which the students gain a real appreciation of
what it takes to raise a family.
The next meeting will be on January, 17th, 2006 at the Batesville Memorial
Public Library.
