1910 - 1919



1910

Year Events
The Kirschbaum Blacksmith shop on West Pearl was sold in 1910. Goyert and Wonning built a large brick garage and sales building on its site. This is where Hirt & Ellco now is located.

The new Bloemer Building on the northwest corner of George and Main Street was occupied in 1910 by the August Bloemer family on the second floor. Frank Walsman and Herman Erbacher' shoe store was on the ground floor. A small building at the back of the shoe store was occupied by Joseph Mollaun’s Harness shop.

George Mehlon built a frame tailor shop on Boehringer Street adjacent to the Herald building in 1910.




1911

Year Events
H.F.E. Schrader built a 3 story brick store room and apartment house at the corner of Elm and W. Pearl street in 1911. It contained 2 large store rooms and 6 apartments with all the modern conveniences of basement, attic, hallways, plumbing and fire escapes.




1912

Year Events
Two major league baseball players had their origins in Batesville. Joe Benz, known as Blitzin' Benz, started out on a West Virginia team. He also pitched for the Chicago White Sox in 1912 and 1913. Lawrence Nichol played catcher on a Michigan pro team in 1909



1913

Year Events
A baby shoe factory was established by John Macke on West George Street in September 1913 and occupied the front of the brick building owned by Frank Meyer. In 1921 it merged with an overall company and was manufacturing those garments until the building was taken over by the Wm. B. Goyert Ice Plant Company in 1921.




1914

Year Events
A new sport was introduced to Batesville with the organization of a golf club in 1914. Dr. Robertson Smith, a Scotsman and enthusiastic golfer moved to the city in 1913 and developed the links into one of the best courses in Southern Indiana. A new amusement craze swept across the US in 1930. Harry Sitterding built a miniature golf course at the corner of Columbus Avenue and Smith Street. Called Tom Thumb Golf the fad only lasted about 2 years.

1919 - winter - Prell-Bland American Legion Post Organied - Met at second floor of Herald-Tribune Building. 140 members. 1923 meeting room provided at Memorial building. First Boy Scout Troop organized by the Legion. 1946 Legion moved to new location
