Between 1860 - 1870, Mr. Boehringer built a row of dwellings on the north
side of North Street, now called Boehringer Street. These buildings were
built with a view to uniformity and regularity. They were all of one style,
low houses of one story and attic rooms with two front doors, four rooms and
an inner staircase leading to attic rooms.
Henry Boehringer built a large three story and basement frame structure
around 1859 - 60 on Broadway Street (East Pearl Street.) near Park Avenue
where he lived. It was know as Boehringer Hall because of the dance floor
on the third floor. The dance floor was reached by an elevator operated by
hand. Each floor, except the third, contained eight to ten rooms which were
used as apartments. The basement was used by the Catholic congregation for
church purposes prior to the building of St. Louis Church. The building was
also used as a boarding house and office building where doctors and other
professional men lived.
Henry Boehringer was also a lover of birds. He had a room in his residence
glassed off and used as an aviary. He had a large number of imported birds
which included singing birds and parrots.
In the 1860’s henry Boehringer had an ice-pond, an outdoor dance platform,
and a bowling alley on his property on the north side of town.

John F. Brinkman built the original Sherman House as a hotel and rooming house
in 1865. At. that time, General W. T. Sherman had won his final victory for
the Union Army with his famous "march to the sea". Mr. Brinkman chose the
general’s name for his hotel because so many Ripley and Franklin County men
served in the all-German 83rd Indiana Volunteer Infantry. The business
passed through a number of owners and by 1900 it was purchased by August
Bloemer and valued at $4000.00. In 1913, a new porch was added to the entire
front across the sidewalk on Main Street. It was to remain a shelter from
sun and storm for 21 years. By 1933 it was modernized throughout and the
porch removed. George Niemeyer, the new proprietor in 1922 installed a
cafeteria-lunchroom.
Sebastian Messersmith built a 2 story frame house on the west side of Main
Street just north of South Street known as Union Hall in 1865. It was built
with an entrance hall with stairway, 2 rooms on either side of the hallway
on each floor. The upper floor had a large room for use as a dance hall or
other public gathering. He operated it as a boarding house for mill workmen
and visiting lumber dealers. It was used by the Fire Department as a meeting
place in the early 1880s. It was also used as a school while the public
school building on South Street was rebuilt during the winter of 1875-76.
